The
design for the garden at Richard House was one of three
submitted to the staff for their selection. The one
picked was by Rachel Matthews and centred round a “yellow
brick road” with sweeping curves leading to a
gazebo behind the “Telly Tubbies” mound
of grass.
Ideally
designed for children it also features a curved wall
with holes in it giving glimpses of the main garden
through these ‘portholes’ from the sitting
area which is partly hidden and gives a place for peace
and seclusion.
Also featured are two water features
– the major one with water pouring from the outlet
on the top to a hidden pool and a smaller one in the
main area where water cascades over a brightly coloured
ball.
Colours and smells are highly featured
in the overall design and there is a wide range of planting
from bamboo to fruit trees (apple, pear and plum) which
will delight the children with their blossom and, when
established, with fruit. Also featured is an area with
a range of herbs.
The garden was officially opened
as ‘The Memory Garden’ by Tommy Walsh of
Groundforce in June 2002 and we hope will delight children
for years to come.
