Rachel House in Kinross is currently the only Children’s Hospice
in Scotland. It serves a huge area of population. The Greenfingers
garden project on this site is also one of the most extensive in our
programme of developments to date. Kinross, on the shores of Loch
Leven, is 13 miles from Dunfermline, 16 miles from Perth, and 18 miles
from Kirkaldy.
 Rachel House, in the centre of Kinross, occupies the grounds of a large mansion.
It is set in mature and well maintained formal gardens with several excellent,
child-friendly areas.
Hospice staff, however, wanted a ‘wow’ area, designed to catch the imagination of children by the inclusion of sensory features. Water, lights, smells and sounds were all to be created in an area of unused land, accessed through a gateway. The area is on a steep slope, featuring many mature trees - a challenge both for the garden designer and the contractor.
Two outstanding designs were prepared, with the selected scheme created by Stephen Ogg, a young designer based in the Kinross neighbourhood. Work has now been completed to the evident satisfaction of the Hospice:
