   Keech Cottage, Luton

The garden at the back of Keech Cottage was rough grass going up over a hill. Much of it had been mown, but some areas were too steep and were covered in docks. It was planned to fence this bit off – cut the docks regularly with a strimmer and concentrate on the lower slope.

A garden with a tarmac pathway was designed leading to a paved area at the top surrounded by trellis and aromatic plants. From this, looking down, a small rill ran down into a pond at the bottom. The lower level was raised by using a row of poles securely anchored to level the lower bed.

The local Rotary Club undertook all the planting.

A second garden was also improved – the special room garden where a new slate water feature and new planting were installed.

The garden was opened by Radha Dodhia, one of the children, and Judy Hawkes, who is in charge of the gardens at Keech Cottage, on 21st July 2003.

The garden was designed by Madeleine Davis, and the construction was undertaken by Bell Plantation of Towcester, Northants. Plants were all donated by Poplar Nursery & Garden Centre and all the planting was undertaken by Flitwick Vale Rotary Club.

Generously donated materials:

  • Hozelock Ltd - Liner and pumps
  • Porous Pipe Ltd - Leaky hose
  • Poplars Nursery & Garden Centre - Plants
  • Stonemarket - Paving and Stones
  • Herts Timber Supplies - Trellis and Posts
  • TDP - Membrane

The money to build this garden came from donations from Merrill Lynch Investment Managers.
