Clare Matthews, one of the UK’s
leading designers of gardens for children, has created
a magnificent garden for CHASE Hospice Care at its
children’s hospice, Christopher’s, Godalming,
near Guildford.
The garden is packed with elements to intrigue and
interest children. Unusual features include mirrors,
dinosaur and cobweb sculptures in rope, outdoor speakers
to introduce sound into the environment, special play
surface and a delightful and original ‘Trees
of Tranquillity’ water feature (valued at £2,500)
designed and donated by Mehrdad Tafreshi.
The £30,000 cost to build the garden has been
raised by the staff of B&Q in a series of Greenfingers
Appeal raffles at national gardening events such as
Gardeners’ World Live and Hampton Court Flower
Show. B&Q also donated plants and paving to the
project, and volunteers from their staff helped plant
up the landscaping.
Rob Cissell, chief executive of B&Q, opened the
garden on 23 June 2004.
